JAKOB KELLENBERGER
ICRC PRESIDENT

Jakob Kellenberger (Switzerland) assumed the Presidency of
the International Committee of the Red Cross on January 1,
2000. He replaced Cornelio Sommaruga. At the time of his
election, he held the position as Secretary of State for .
Foreign Affairs (one of the highest career positions in
Switzerland's Federal Department of Foreign Affairs).
Since taking office, Kellenberger has traveled extensively,
including an official visit to Washington in November 2001,
when he met with Secretary Powell. In 2002, Kellenberger
completed a major restructuring of top management in ICRC
headquarters.

Mr. Kellenberger was born in 1944 in Heiden, in the Canton
of Appenzell, in Switzerland. He studied at the University
of Zurich and received a doctorate degree in law. He
entered the Swiss Diplomatic Service in 1974. Between 1975
and 1984, he was posted to the Swiss Embassies in Madrid,
Brussels, and London. He returned to the Department of
Foreign Affairs in 1984 as head of the Office of European
Integration. He received the rank of Ambassador in 1988.
In 1992, he was promoted to Secretary of State for Foreign
Affairs and Political Director. Mr. Kellenberger was the
principal negotiator for the bilateral, sectorial
agreements between Switzerland and the European

. Community/Union between 1989 and 1998.

He is married to Elisabeth Kellenberger-Jossi. They have
two daughters, Eleonore and Christina.
