Background Summary of CIA activities at Abu Ghurayb Prison
Abu Ghurayb Prison holds circa 8,000 - 10,000
prisoners. Most of prisoners are held for routine
criminal violations (e.g., theft, assault;
manslaughter). A small number are held in the
isolation unit, circa 100. The U.S. Military runs
the prison with the assistance of Iraqi guards.

died
advised'OIG of the situation and OIG
opened an, investigation, in conjunction with U.S.
Military investigators. The investigation is still
ongoing. The select oversight committees have been
notified of the investigation. (We believe that the
photo of the deceased prisoner shown 611 . 60 Minutes is
Al-Jamaidi.)
• Iraqi General Abed Hamed
Mowhoush . died while in DOD custody and there are ,
allegation that physical abuse may have been a factor
in his death. [
OIG, in conjunction with DOD, is
investigating whether the AgenCy, had any involvement
with the death, The select oversight committees have
been notified of the investigation.
